I think you'll find the PBS FRONTLINE program "Poisoned Waters" intriguing. This program looks at the alarming ecological degradation of the Chesapeake Bay and Puget Sound; the conditions, the causes and the possibilities for rescuing these ecologically critical American waterways.
This New York Times article looks at a report issued by the environmental group Riverkeeper that reveals the disturbing condition of the Hudson River. The report points to failing wastewater treatment plants that discharge effluent to the river and poorly maintained septic systems in the watershed as the source of the pollution that has created this condition.
This video, “Polluted Harbors”, produced for the New York Times Series Toxic Waters documents the effect that combined sewer overflow systems have on the waterways surrounding Newport Rhode Island.
